The
history of Pantyhose The
invention of pantyhose Dupond had invented nylon stockings wich
had become a sensation. Fifties clothing was conservative, men wore gray flannel
suits and women wore dresses with pinched in waists and high heels. French fashion
designers such as Dior, Channel and Givenchy were popular and copied in America.
Teenagers were defined as a separate generation and were represented by James
Dean who wore blue jeans in Rebel Without a Cause and created a fashion and attitude
sensation. The post World War II Baby Boom had created 70 million teenagers
for the sixties, and these youth swayed the fashion, the fads and the politics
of the decade. The youth was either in the streets protesting against the war,
civil rights and women's equality - or in the parks sharing flower power with
the hippies. A blast in individual expression, sexual freedom and artistic creativity.
It was also during the 1960's that Playboy and other magazines gained popularity,
some pinups became more fetish, even showing bondage and wips, one the most famous
models being Bettie Page. In 1959 DuPont invented Lycra© also known
as Spandex, which can stretch up to seven times its original length without breaking
and subsequently recover its shape, thus dramatically improving the fit and comfort
of hosiery as well as its strength. Latter that year Allen Gant Senior invented
the pantyhose - underpants and stockings all in one garment. Pantyhose was invented
the same year that Barbie dolls where introduced by Mattel. But nobody noticed
this waist-high hosiery garment for women, it was available on a very limited
basis, primarily for dance or theatrical use. But soon, an unrelated fashion statement
would change all of that. In the early 1960s, a skinny little rail of a
model named Twiggy stepped forward in fashionable London in a mini-skirt and things
were never to be the same again. The hem of the skirt was up, and as the miniskirt
took off as a fashion item, stockings and all of the old paraphernalia that went
with them had to go. Women desperately needed a hosiery product that went all
the way up their legs - the pantyhose! Seamless
Pantyhose By the mid 60s miniskirts or hot pants often worn with
go-go boots were in vogue. In 1965, Glen Raven Mills developed a seamless pantyhose
version and pantyhose was "in". Even though hemlines since have been
up, down and in between, women have not given up their pantyhose. Once in them,
they never went back to the bulky inconvenience and discomfort of snaps, clips
and corsets of an era gone by.

| Manufacturers have
created many artistic and revealing packages for their hoisery, for some these
have become collection items. | The fashion influence of Sixties
hippies was mainstreamed in the Seventies, as men sported shoulder length hair
and nontraditional clothing became the rage, including bellbottom pants, hip huggers,
colorful patches, hot pants, platform shoes, earth shoes, clogs, T-shirts, and
gypsy dresses. Knits and denims were the fabrics of choice. Leisure suits for
men became commonplace, and women were fashionable in everything from ankle-length
grandmother dresses to hot pants and micro-miniskirts. The 1980s became
the Me! Me! Me! generation of status seekers. The combination of Nancy Reagan's
elegance and Princess Di's love of fashion, stimulated a return to opulent clothing
styles. The mini made a major revival, denim was important. Anne Klein, Perry
Ellis, Donna Karan, and Calvin Klein were designers for the 80s. Film continued
to influence and inspire clothing. The Flashdance look had young and old in tank
tops, tight-fitting pants or torn jeans, and leg-warmers. Teens not wearing designer
clothes opted for Michael Jackson's glove or Madona's fishnet stockings, leather,
and chains. The golden age of pantyhose started in the early 60s and lasted throughout
the 80s. Modern times and the effect of the internet
The 90s where very much a technological decade. For the youth, the fashion began
with Grunge on one hand and preppie on the other. Hip Hop style was popular. Boys'
jeans have grown bigger and bigger, worn low on the hips, and girls are wearing
bellbottoms and poor boy tops reminiscent of the 70's. Dress down Fridays became
commonplace and gradually developed into a more casual work dress code altogether.
Khaki pants and polo shirts or denim shirts were the workplace norm. New fabrics
such as microfiber and tencel competed with the ever-popular cotton and linen.
Tattoos and body piercing have also become a part of modern fashion. The
arrival of the Internet in the late 1990's changed our lifestyle through the way
we communicate, spend our money and do business. Though "the golden age of
pantyhose" may be over, the internet shows us that there is a strong atraction
